Pic(s) of the Week: First World War Logistics

DS385 Cadets just completed a three lesson historical case study on First World War logistics.  Above effectively depicts Martin Van Creveld's thesis that the coming of the Great War marked a revolution in military logistics due to the industrialization of war.  Piles of empty shell casings near the Fricourt Portion of the Somme.  From a nice blog on War and Distance.

Below is the headstone of the chief engineer of the Panama Canal, and organizer of the US Army Supply System in WWI, General George Goethals, USMA 1880.

Back in the Saddle - Pic of the Week

DS385: Sustaining the Force has recommenced for the AY 14-2 semester.  The Cadets and I will be once again applying issues related to military logistics to military strategy and national defense.  The pic of the week is an homage to the original "Powerpoint Ranger," Charles Joseph Minard, who created this timeless chart depicting the strength of Napoleon's Army against the distance/terrain traveled and temperature (during redeployment/retreat).
